Tim Cook began working at Apple Inc back in 1998 after Steve Jobs approached him for the role. Initially Cook wasn’t convinced, but after meeting Jobs in person he decided to take him up on his offer.
When giving a speech in Auburn University Cook recollected on his thoughts; “no more than five minutes into my initial interview with Steve, I wanted to throw caution and logic to the wind and join Apple. My intuition already knew that joining Apple was a once in a lifetime opportunity to work for the creative genius, and to be on the executive team that could resurrect a great American company.”
Unfortunately, after only 6 weeks of being the one in charge, due to Pancreatic Cancer Steve Jobs passed away. This tragedy thrust the company to the forefront of everybody’s minds, and gained unprecedented media attention. The focus was all on Cook, and what direction he was going to take the company now that Jobs was not around.
Aside from his career in Apple, Cook is still massively influential
Tim Cook began his career at IBM. He stayed for 12 years and climbed up the ranks to become the Director of North American Fulfillment. Following on from IBM, Cook took his career to Intelligent Electronics as their Chief Operating Officer. Similarly, a job title he would later conclude at Apple under Founder Steve Jobs.
Cook publicly identifies as gay, and he is the first Chief Executive of a Fortune 500 company to do so.
After just 6 week as CEO, Cook was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Cook also serves on the board of directors at the National Football Foundation and of Nike, Inc.
