What started as a German post office is now the United Kingdom’s biggest mobile network. While no longer known as T-Mobile, ‘EE’ enjoys a market share of 33% of all mobile phone users.
The company provides coverage to 99% of the UK’s population. As a result, EE is miles ahead of the competition. Of the other three big four networks, O2 covers 66%, Vodafone covers 65% and Three covers 53%.
Their unrivalled service isn’t a result of early entry into the industry. Both O2 and Vodafone are older. It is the result of a ballsy business move, which saw two huge providers come together to take control of the market.
Orange and T-Mobile merged in 2015 to leapfrog O2 and Vodafone. Prior to the deal, Orange had a 22% market share, while T-Mobile had 15%. Despite Orange’s superiority, they agreed to a 50/50 split.
However, that ownership structure didn’t last long, as EE joined the BT family within months.

T-Mobile was founded by Cable & Wireless through their Mercury Communications subsidiary. They created the company in 1993 as Mercury One2One. It was the UK’s smallest mobile network, but also the first 2G service in the world. That eventually attracted the interest of Deutsche Telekom.
Deutsche Telekom
German phone company Deutsche Telekom purchased $8.4 billion to acquire One2One in 1999. Deutsche Telekom viewed the deal as an opportunity to expand into the emerging global mobile network market. Within two years, One2One rebranded as T-Mobile.
BT
BT completed their takeover of EE in 2015. They are already the UK’s leading telephone provider, but the company recognised that the industry was moving away from landlines, with mobile devices now dominating. Purchasing EE allowed them to keep up with the changing market.

Despite the instability of changing hands three times in just over two decades, the T-Mobile net worth has continued to climb.
EE is now listed as part of the BT Group, meaning that there is no exact worth assigned to the company. However, upon purchasing the company, BT valued EE at £12.5 billion.
