Hologic, a medical technology company, and Google Cloud have entered into a partnership under which Google Cloud’s machine learning (ML) technologies will be integrated with Hologic’s Genius Digital Diagnostics system.

Financial details of the multi-year partnership were not revealed.

The collaboration is aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and ML technologies to help screen and fast-track the eradication of cervical cancer across the world.

Hologic claimed that its Genius Digital Diagnostics system is the first digital cytology platform to integrate AI with advanced digital imaging, which will help in detecting pre-cancerous lesions and cancer cells in women.

The collaboration with Google Cloud will help Hologic in augmenting the deep learning component of Genius Digital Diagnostics system, which is now expected to provide better insights from cytology slides for cytotechnologists and pathologists.

As part of the partnership, Google Cloud provides safe and reliable cloud data architecture to further expand the capabilities of the diagnostics system.

Google Cloud healthcare and life sciences managing director Joe Miles said: “Through this collaboration with Hologic, we are helping to evolve digital diagnostics by complementing their expertise in diagnostics and AI with our expertise in machine learning.

“We are further bringing to life our two organisations’ shared commitment to reimagining digital diagnostic capabilities for laboratories and healthcare providers across the globe, ultimately enabling them to better serve their patients.”

The medical technology firm stated that it is exploring ways to improve laboratory performance, healthcare providers’ decision-making and patient care.

Hologic diagnostic solutions division president Kevin Thornal said: “Hologic has been at the forefront of cervical cancer screening for more than 30 years, and we are building on that legacy with this strategic collaboration.

“Enhancing our use of AI with Google Cloud’s machine learning capabilities and cloud architecture is the next natural step in this journey forward.”

Hologic said that its Genius Digital Diagnostics system secured CE mark for diagnostic use in Europe and is not available for sale in the US.
