Google Cloud has signed an agreement to provide computing and networking resources to Elon Musk’s SpaceX to help deliver internet service around the world using the latter’s Starlink satellites.

As part of the partnership, SpaceX will install Starlink ground stations within Google data centre locations.

The move will help provide safe and reliable delivery of data from over 1,500 Starlink satellites launched to orbit to-date to locations at the network edge via Google Cloud in the second half of this year.

Google Cloud said that its high-capacity private network will help offer Starlink’s global satellite internet service, connecting businesses and consumers to the cloud and Internet.

Google Cloud infrastructure senior vice president Urs Hölzle said: “Applications and services running in the cloud can be transformative for organisations, whether they’re operating in a highly networked or remote environment.

“We are delighted to partner with SpaceX to ensure that organisations with distributed footprints have seamless, secure, and fast access to the critical applications and services they need to keep their teams up and running.”

Through the partnership, large organisations such as public sector agencies or businesses that operate in remote areas will benefit from Starlink’s constellation of satellites to deliver cloud data and applications to the network edge.

SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell said: “Combining Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency broadband with Google’s infrastructure and capabilities provides global organisations with the secure and fast connection that modern organisations expect.

“We are proud to work with Google to deliver this access to businesses, public sector organisations, and many other groups operating around the world.”

In October last year, SpaceX and Microsoft signed an agreement to provide satellite-powered internet connectivity on Azure.

The partnership would provide satellite connectivity between field-deployed assets and cloud resources across the world to both the public and private sector through Starlink satellite network.
