Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) and Google Cloud have entered into a partnership aimed at transforming the IT security strategy of the Spanish banking group.

In this connection, Google Cloud will help the bank in streamlining and enhancing its security infrastructure.

The parties will work together for developing new artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models for predicting and stopping cyberattacks against BBVA’s banking infrastructure.

The Spanish banking group will deploy Google Cloud’s security analytics platform Chronicle. The platform will help in detecting and probing threats at scale by helping teams in storing and analysing all their security data in a single place.

Google Cloud global financial services industry VP Derek White said: “The Chronicle platform was built to help companies like BBVA improve its security infrastructure, leveraging the speed and scalability of Google Cloud’s technology.

“This collaboration will solidify Chronicle as one of the key pillars of BBVA’s security infrastructure and will support its strategy in offering its customers a trusted approach to products and services.”

BBVA will also add Google Cloud’s artificial intelligence capabilities into its security strategy and shape its “Security Operations Center (SOC) of the Future” initiative.

The partners will jointly develop a new platform in the SOC. The platform will enable the Spanish banking group to employ a more advanced technology by putting it in a more cost-effective environment, and with better scalability.

BBVA chief security officer Álvaro Garrido said: “This partnership represents a leap forward for the bank, and allows us to be at the forefront in preventing threats to the security of our financial infrastructure and our clients.

“The platform surprised us in its ability to quickly and accurately mitigate possible threats. Google Cloud’s Chronicle meets our expectations and will be a magnificent partner in the transformation of our security posture, just as Google Cloud has been in other areas of the bank.”
