Internet firm Baidu has partnered with China Huaneng Group to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies to drive the intelligent transformation of the energy industry in China.

The two firms have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to pursue a multi-faceted partnership that will cover information technology, digital technology, and other related areas.

As part of the partnership, Baidu will support the digital transformation of the state-owned power generator China Huaneng for enhanced efficiencies and users’ experience.

Baidu stated: “The partnership aligns with Baidu’s long-standing investments in AI technologies, cloud computing, and big data capabilities, which aim to help various industries – including energy, transportation, education, and finance – undergo intelligent transformations, which will culminate in a fully intelligent economy and society.”

Leveraging its capabilities in AI-powered new infrastructure, Baidu will help Huaneng in integrating the digital economy with the energy and power industry.

The partnership is aimed at jointly developing an advanced automated and intelligent financial shared services platform that will help in creating an integrated digital system for finance.

In addition, the two companies intend to offer more digitised, intelligent energy-related data services to support the intelligent upgrading of China’s energy industry.

Baidu will also help in the development of a platform for independent and free exchanges of energy data, a professional-level database for the industry, and a modern energy software as a service (SaaS) system to better serve society.

Through its Baidu AI Cloud, the company offers intelligent energy solutions to the energy industry.

The AI-tech company is also working with other major energy companies such as State Grid to digitise and intelligently transform processes like energy production and electricity dispatching management.

Baidu chief technology officer Haifeng Wang said that AI is a new kinetic energy and new engine that will drive the high-quality development of China’s economy.
