International Business Machines (IBM) is reportedly planning to pause hiring for certain job positions as nearly 7,800 roles are expected to be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming years.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna in an interview with Bloomberg told that hiring especially for back-office jobs like human resources will be halted or scaled back.

Besides, the tech major’s CEO said that 30% of non-customer-facing positions would be replaced by AI and automation within five years.

Krishna has been quoted by the publication, as saying: “I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period.

“More mundane tasks such as providing employment verification letters or moving employees between departments will likely be fully automated.”

As part of the new move, open positions created when employees leave on their own would not be filled, stated IBM.

According to IBM, in the next ten years, specific HR functions, including the evaluation of productivity and composition of the workforce are less probable to be replaced by AI technology.

IBM has not implemented a broad policy to freeze hiring and is actively recruiting employees for numerous positions, as per various media reports.

Last month, IBM reported a net income of $927m for the first quarter of 2023 (Q1 2023) that ended 31 March 2023, which is an increase of 26% compared to $733m in the same quarter of the previous year.

The company also reported a total revenue of around $14.25bn for Q1 2023, which remained flat compared to revenue of $14.2bn earned in Q1 2022.
